QUINT FOCUSED ON the messages as they came in rather than let his mind wander over his last comment. Ree had gotten quiet and he didn’t want to get inside his head about what that indicated.

At least he was going to get to do the heavy lifting with Vadik. She would basically play the role of arm candy while he infiltrated. The switch was comforting as they got closer to the evil that had caused Tessa’s death. Her baby had been on his mind a great deal lately. Shaking off the anger that came with going down that trail, he refocused on the phone.

“Looks like I’ll have a new wardrobe waiting as well as a new car,” he stated.

“What will you be driving?” she asked.

“A BMW convertible 4 series in skyscraper-gray metallic,” he said. Not bad.

“The appearance of a once-wealthy life of crime. Stinks that you aren’t much of a convertible person,” she stated.

“When did I ever say that?” he asked.

She laughed and he realized she was teasing.

“Besides, it’s part of the cover story. Apparently, after being locked up, I need the open air,” he said.

“How long have you been inside?” she asked, figuring they needed to get their stories straight.

“Three years,” he continued. “We bottomed out our savings on appeals and finally got a judge to listen. So the story is that I’m in need of work and looking to sell the BMW to keep us going. The apartment where we live belongs to Jenn and Raul, who are out of the country right now.”

“What’s our last names?” she asked.

“You’re Ree Parker-Matthews and I’m Quint Matthews,” he stated.

She repeated their names a couple of times. “Got it.”

Ree was one of those people who possessed a unique ability to hear something once, repeat it a couple of times and lock it in. Then again, she was one of the sharpest agents he’d ever worked with, no disrespect meant to Tessa’s memory.

“What else?” she asked.

“You’ve been getting by living with your sister and her family for the last three years and couldn’t wait to get out of Seattle after my release,” he stated.

“A sister?” she balked and that caused him to laugh.

“You really wouldn’t know what to do with one of those, would you?” he teased.

“I’ll do my best to sell the lie but it’s too bad they didn’t give me a brother to work with instead,” she said. “Brothers, I know.”

“Pretend you grew up braiding each other’s hair and singing into hairbrushes or something,” he quipped.

Ree fake-gagged. “No. Sorry. Can’t. My sister will be the marriage-and-family type, while I couldn’t stand that noose around my neck. I’m a party girl, remember? I can always say my sister was practically a puritan and we weren’t close. That should help.”

“We can use the same story about our first date as before,” he stated.

“Right. That means we met in Austin,” she said.

“I was passing through and stopped off to hear a band,” he continued.

“Black Pistol Fire,” she immediately stated.

“I like that band, too,” he stated.
